A little about Smudging…….What is Smudging and Why Would I Want to Do That?
An ancient form of clearing and blessing. Smudging is an easy yet powerful way to cleanse and set an intention for your sacred space. Your body and environment are all sacred spaces.
Smudging is a Native North American cleansing technique using smoke from sacred plants to wash away unwanted and impure energies to restore balance to yourself and your environment. Cleansing and blessing rituals have been used in most traditional cultures around the world. Smudging is an easy yet powerful way to cleanse a sacred space; your body and environment are sacred spaces.
Our bodies, and environment, are not just physical matter they also vibrate with a quiet invisible energy/frequency. Cleansing our space and bodies energy’s with techniques like smudging clear away the emotional and psychic trash that may have piled up over the years. An energetic cleansing is just as important as a physical one, for our space and bodies.
Traditionally a mix of sacred herbs and resins were burned in a special bowl while the smoke was wafted around the person, or space, that was being cleansed and purified. Smudge sticks are bundles of dried herbs, like sacred sage, tied to together to offer an easy way of smudging. Smudging is seen as a way of connecting the physical world and the spiritual world.
Sage is used to drive away unwanted and impure thoughts, energies, spirits, and influences, it transforms energy and brings in change. Cedar and Juniper can also be used.
Palo Santo (Sacred Wood) is used to attract more joy, harmony, and pure energy after the Sage has opened space by removing the unwanted energies. Sweetgrass and Lavender can also be used.
What you need to Smudge:
- Sacred Sage Smudge Stick
- Lit Candle
- Palo Santo (or Sweetgrass)
- Bowl or Shell
- Feather (optional)
Light your Candle. A lit candle represents the element of fire. Fire has a purifying effect, is inspiring, and can bring in transformation, light, courage and purity of your intentions.
Take a few deep breaths, center yourself, and set your intentions.
Light the end of your smudge stick from the candle until the tip starts to smolder, then put the flame out so that the stick is smoking. When you light your smudge stick be aware that you are connecting with a spiritual tradition that originates from the depths of time while keeping a pure heart, open mind, and sense of adventure.
Call on the spirit of the sacred sage to drive away all negative energy from your heart, mind, and soul taking away all that is unworthy and impure while possibly blessing it for the purpose it served, for in some way it did serve you.
Next carefully waft the smoke toward your heart with your hand or feather, go over your head, shoulders, down your arms, front of your body, legs, back of the body, and your chakras (if you are aware of them) all while imaging you are breathing out of you, or your space, all of the unworthy and impure thoughts, emotions, and energies that have become attached to you. See them releasing and sinking into the fires in the center of the earth to be recycled and reborn. ***Be cautious of embers flying off of the smudge stick.
Set the smudge stick in a bowl or shell to put it out.
Now light your Palo Santo using the candle.
Repeat the smudging around the body as you did with the sage calling in the spirit of the Palo Santo asking it to bring in joyful, heart expanding, and uplifting energies to balance and purify your soul while imagining yourself, or space, being surrounded by a loving gentle harmonious energy that uplifts your soul raising your vibration breathing in positiveness, courage, and love.
When you’re done place the Palo Santo in the bowl or shell and put it out.
Seal your ritual with a form of gratitude thanking all you feel drawn to thank.
Enjoy your moments.
This is the same technique you would use to smudge someone else, your environment, or any object.
